"'Scott on Screen' auf Deutsch for the German-impaired. Very, very happy to announce that "Scott Walker - 30 Century Man" has been invited to the 57th Berlin International Film Festival.

Very recent news, I probably shouldn’t be blogging it, but more details will be posted as they come available. Festival runs Feb 8-18, 2007.

This is an extra-special treat as my last film "Cinemania" was made in collaboration with a German filmmaker (and lots of German funds) so I have a real soft-spot for Germany, Berlin in particular. So, vielen Dank!"

The Mountain Goats - Going to Tasmania

"One more domestic show before we set sail for Tasmania: it's Christmas at the Cradle on Monday, December 18th. Approximately 10,000 bands are playing 3 Christmas songs apiece and I'm one of 'em. I am so over-pleased with my own super-secret selections and can't wait to play them. C'mon out and celebrate just how ridiculously blessed we all are around here: Bowerbirds? Billy Sugarfix? Bellafea? All on the same night? And that's just the "B"s? For real.

In other news, we thought a little while about late winter in the U.S. and then we said to ourselves: to hell with it, let's go to Sweden. And other points north. Mark your calendars, bring your mittens, lace up your dancing shoes! We are stoked."

Robin Guthrie finishes Annie Barker album

"... I think it's fair to say that the first couple of songs we worked on together were the most difficult and after a point we seemed to find an energy which prevailed for the rest of the recordings. The songs just get better and better and now we have finished ten of them and it seems like a really rounded album, taking you on a journey around her mind, which seems to reach out and touch you and demand to be listened to. My role has been 'producer' although producer seems to mean a different thing for each session I do. Annie has written the songs. I've been playing guitar, bass, drums, whatever has been needed really. Annie has made two or three trips to France during this year to work with me and now we find ourselves with a finished album which I, for one, am really proud of..."

Modern English circa 1982

"This is a shot from my archives. I was part of the staff of a fanzine called 'No Commercial Potential' at the time. Modern English had not broken through commercially and their first album is still stunning to this day. I was quite pleased to catch them on tour and snag an interview. On top of it all, the show later that night was an absolute killer."

Emma Pollock at Burnsong Song House

I'm playing a couple of gigs in a week's time as part of the Burnsong Song House extravaganza. 8 of us will be locked up in a house in SW Scotland for 5 days to write new material then play 2 gigs at the end of it consisting of entirely new material. I've never done anything like this before and am frankly terrified. I apologise in advance if anyone comes along to these shows and finds I have run away. Details of the gigs are below.

8 more songwriters take the challenge of entering the Burnsong Song House to write songs together for five days. Hear Kenny Anderson (King Creosote), Emma Pollock, Chris Difford, Karine Polwart, Sushil K Dade (future Pilot AKA), special guest, Canadian singer songwriter Michael Johnston, and Burnsong 2005 Finalist, Kim Edgar perform the songs they have written and some of their own at these two gigs.

Beirut news

"After the rigors of a demanding tour and the exhaustion that resulted from it, the band is taking some time off to enjoy the holidays with lots of skateboarding and trolling Craigslist for used instruments. But that doesn't mean there's no new music to share. For those of you outside of North America, you can enjoy the release of Gulag Orkestar on the mighty fine 4AD record label. It came out at the end of October. As a bonus, their version of the record comes with the Lon Gisland EP (pronounced Lon Guy-land. Get it?). But, what about Mr and Mrs. American, and Mssr and Mme Canadian? Well, lucky you! You have two choices. In late January, Ba Da Bing will be putting out the Lon Gisland EP as a stand alone release. It's got five tracks, four of which are actual songs (!), including a full band version of "Scenic World." Personally, I think "Elephant Gun" (the first track on Lon Gisland) may be the best song Zach has yet written. Currently, Zach is home, already working on new songs for the next album. Will Lily Allen make a guest vocal appearance on a few songs? Probably not, but if you don't hold onto your dreams, then reality will smack you hard in the face."
